In 2010 ABC News reported that according to Louise Patten (the granddaughter of the only surviving senior officer) the Titanic hit the iceberg because the man at the steering wheel made a mistake & turned right when he should have turned left.
This mistake was caught and corrected, but not in enough time.
We will likely never know why for sure.
